Proterial Introduces Captive Use Solar Power Generation Equipment
with Approximate Total Output of 8 MW at Chinese Bases

Proterial, Ltd.

Proterial, Ltd. (hereinafter “Proterial”) introduced captive use solar power generation equipment at three production bases in China. They have an approximate total output of 8 MW (7,683 kW), and it is expected that they will reduce CO2 emissions by around 5,500 tons a year.

The Proterial Group is working to introduce renewable energy at its major production bases to generate a total of 35 million kWh or more of electricity per year from renewable sources of energy by fiscal 2030. The Proterial Group will continue to work to reduce CO2 emissions by using renewable energy and stepping up its energy conservation activities. It will also develop and provide advanced environmentally friendly products in response to climate change issues and to help create a decarbonized society as a green enabler.

1. Background

Proterial has defined a contribution to realizing of a decarbonized society as an important management issue (material issue). Regarding CO2 emissions from its operations, Proterial aims to achieve a reduction of 38% in FY2030 (from FY2015) as a medium-term target and carbon neutrality by FY2050 as a long-term target, thereby contributing to the transition to a decarbonized society. To this end, we are working to expand the use of renewable energy and to promote energy conservation.

Proterial has set the target of generating a total of 35 million kWh (35,000 MWh) of electricity per year from renewable sources of energy by fiscal 2030. To date, it has installed captive use solar power generation equipment in the Kumagaya district (Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture), Moka district (Moka City, Tochigi Prefecture), Ibaraki district (Hitachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture) and Vietnam. To accelerate the reduction of CO2 emissions, Proterial is working to install solar power generation equipment at production bases in China as well.

  • Note: As of the end of fiscal 2024, Proterial is generating a total of 19,185 MWh of renewable energy per year.

2. Outline

Proterial introduced captive use solar power equipment at several production bases in China, specifically at Proterial Specialty Steel (Dong Guan) Co., Ltd. (Guangdong Province, China), Proterial Cable (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. (Jiangsu Province, China) and Proterial Metals (Suzhou), Ltd. (Jiangsu Province, China). They have an approximate total output of 8 MW (7,683 kW), and it is expected that they will reduce CO2 emissions by around 5,500 tons a year.

To efficiently introduce renewable energy, Proterial has capitalized on the third-party ownership/power purchase agreement (TPO/PPA) model for the generation of solar power to install equipment on the premises of the production bases). In the TPO/PPA model, power sales contractors install, own and manage solar power generation systems on land and building roofs provided by business operators who purchase the electricity generated by the systems. This enables business operators to introduce renewable energy without owning equipment, reducing their capital investment and operation risks.
