1. Background and overview

Proterial regards the aviation field as one of its core growing businesses.

At this coming Paris Air Show, it exhibits low-pressure turbine (LPT) shaft*1 in nickel alloys designed for aircraft engines produced by applying a near-net shape*2 manufacturing technique. To showcase its ability to manufacture large-size components required in large aircraft engines and microstructure control capabilities, it also exhibits a blade in titanium alloys designed for turbine generators produced by Japan Aeroforge Ltd., a company partly financed by Proterial, using the 50,000-ton hydraulic forging press, one of the largest in the world.

Proterial participates in the exhibition to showcase its advanced metallurgical technologies and manufacturing techniques, which should enhance its presence in the global market and help develop the aviation industry further.

2. Products to be exhibited

(1) LPT shaft

(i) Use application: Regional jets*3
(ii) Materials: Nickel-base alloys
(iii) Features: Produced by applying a near-net shape manufacturing technique
(iv) Manufacturing sites: Okegawa Works

(2) Blade in titanium alloys

(i) Use application: Last stage blade used in turbine generators
(ii) Materials: Titanium alloys
(iii) Features: Supports large-size components
Proterial’s microstructure control capabilities and the use of the 50,000-ton hydraulic forging press makes forging with less heating possible
(iv) Manufacturing sites: Yasugi Works and Japan Aeroforge, Ltd

Notes:

  1. *1Near-net shape
Forming to a shape close to the final product.
  2. *2Low pressure turbine (LPT) shaft
A component that makes up an aircraft jet engine. Used at the rear of the jet engine and exposed to burnt gases, it requires extreme heat resistance.
  3. *3Regional jets
A small jet passenger aircraft with fewer than 100 seats.
